SPG Media Plc (1997 - 2005)

SPG Media Plc was an AIM listed group publishing international business journals, specialist industry web sites, conferences and business forums with turnover £37m and 450 staff which has since been taken private.

I was responsible for finance, IT and company secretarial and worked closely with the CEO during a period of growth followed by a significant downsizing of the business.

• Acquired an established profitable web publishing business allowing the group to diversify away form its core print competencies. Co-ordinated the necessary shareholder approvals. Renegotiated the earn-out to facilitate early exit of the principal and full integration of the business.
• Successfully acquired a leading conference producer for the $500bn pharmaceutical market that had been in creditors’ voluntary arrangement allowing further diversification and growth in the business.
• Established a subsidiary in India that grew to 200 staff in eighteen months and which formed the foundation of a strategic data asset of one million key decision makers worldwide.
• Disposed of Debretts to private investors.
• Devised and implemented a capital restructuring that ensured £8m of preference shares were honoured, put the company onto a stable financial footing, and allowed a return to dividends.
